AVG Antivirus Review

Product Overview

AVG has been in the antivirus game for a while. They have been making antivirus and malware protection software for over 25 years.

AVG offers the needed security from threats your devices need. AVG throws in a lot of features in their software, making them a great choice for all-round protection.

AVG does well at detecting threats and removing them. There may be some instances where it removes a malicious program but some traces are left behind. This is often icons that are harmless, but gives the impression the malware is still active to less tech-savvy users.

AVG offers good virus and malware protection. Also included in the protection suite is anti-spyware and anti-rootkit security. Anti-rootkit is a vital security feature, as this prevents viruses from causing great harm. Rootkits often hide itself from antivirus tools and the operating system. They can contain a range of malicious programs, such as keyloggers to gain your login details to your online shopping or banking accounts.

AVG Antivirus also includes a gamer mode, preventing virus scanning or high use of resources when enabled. You can game or watch movies in peace and have the scanning resume when you turn the mode off.

In the more recent versions of AVG, you can also choose to scan removable USB drives. This is a great feature, as viruses are more easy to transfer between devices by USB drives.

AVG also includes the option to create a bootable rescue disk, either through a CD or USB thumb drive.

In many scans by independent lab tests, AVG Antivirus was slower than other antivirus protection. This could be seen as a good thing, as it suggests the scans are thorough. Further scans show that it can ignore recently scanned files that are clean to improve scan times moving forward.

System resources also do take a small hit while a scan is running, more so than competitor software. On modern systems this will be a minor nuisance if noticed, but older devices will stall for brief periods of time.

Final Verdict

AVG Antivirus offers good all-round protection for devices. The solid protection from viruses, malware and spyware is necessary for today's needs. The gamer mode also makes it a great choice for the family PC.

While it falls short on some performance metrics, and lacks decent parental controls, AVG is a great choice. It offers one of the better bangs for your buck - especially if you are on a budget.
